Mr Pui-leung Chan has over 30 years of experience in general insurance with expertise in underwriting and marketing. Mr Praveen Daswani has gained extensive experience in the international financial services sector having worked at both regional and international levels in various management roles encompassing business development, operations and compliance.
 
Under the Governing Committee of the HKFI, there are two Councils responsible for dealing with all technical matters concerning general insurance and life insurance respectively. The General Insurance Council is chaired by Mr David Alexander while the Life Insurance Council is chaired by Ms Charity Au.
 
Established in August 1988, the HKFI enjoys full recognition by the Hong Kong SAR Government as the representative insurer body of the industry and is responsible for the administration of close to 90,000 registered insurance agents in the territory. It exists to promote insurance to the people of Hong Kong and build consumer confidence in the industry by promoting high standards of ethics and professionalism amongst its Members.

Mr Pui-leung Chan
The Hong Kong Federation of Insurers (HKFI) Chairman 2018/2019

Mr Pui-leung Chan is the Chairman of the HKFI, a member of the HKFI Governing Committee and a Councillor of the General Insurance Council (GIC). He is the Chairman of Insurers-Brokers Liaison Committee, Task Force on Greater China Affairs, Task Force on Talent Development, and GIC Legal Working Group. Mr Chan is a member of GIC Task Force on Employees’ Compensation.

Mr Chan is the Deputy Chairman of Employees’ Compensation Insurance Residual Scheme and Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Hong Kong, as well as a Board Member of Employees Compensation Insurer Insolvency Bureau.

Mr Chan, the General Manager of China Taiping Insurance (HK) Company Limited, is responsible for the overall management and business development of the company. He has over 30 years of experience in general insurance with expertise in underwriting and marketing.

Mr Chan holds a Master Degree in Business Administration from the University of Hong Kong and qualifies as a Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, UK.

Mr Praveen Daswani
HKFI Deputy Chairman 2018/2019

A Chartered Insurer by Profession, Mr Praveen Daswani, is the Deputy Chairman of HKFI and a member of the HKFI Governing Committee.

He was first elected to the Life Insurance Council (LIC) in 2009 and became the LIC’s Deputy Chairman in 2016 before taking the Chairmanship of the LIC in 2017. Over the years, he has served on, or chaired, various industry task forces, committees and working groups of the HKFI, including the Stakeholders Steering Committee, the Task Forces on Holistic Consumer Protection Framework and Review of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance amongst others. He was Deputy Chairman of Investment-link Assurance Scheme Products Working Group under the LIC.

Mr Daswani currently serves as a General Committee member and an Honorary Secretary of the Insurance Complaints Bureau. He is also a member of the Hong Kong Advisory Council of the Chartered Insurance Institute.

Mr Daswani is the Local Chief Executive & Branch Manager of Generali Worldwide Insurance Company Limited in Hong Kong, and part of the Management Committee of the Company’s regulated branches in both Hong Kong and Singapore. He has been with the firm since 1995. During this time he has gained extensive experience in the international financial services sector having worked at both regional and international levels in various management roles encompassing Business Development, Operations, and Compliance.

Academically, in addition to holding a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Financial Services from Napier University in Edinburgh, the Graduate Diploma in English and Hong Kong Law from Manchester Metropolitan University, and the Executive Diploma in Management from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, he is a Chartered Insurer, an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute and a Qualified Member of the Personal Finance Society in the UK. Mr Daswani is in addition a Fellow of the International Compliance Association.

General Insurance Council Chairman 2018/2019

Mr David Alexander is the Chairman of the General Insurance Council (GIC) and a member of the HKFI Governing Committee. He is the Chairman of various Task Forces including Competition Law, Consultancy Study on Risk-based Capital Framework, IFRS 17 and Health Care Reform. He is the member of Task Forces on the Independence of the Insurance Authority and Policyholders Protection Scheme, and GIC Reinsurers’ Forum.

Mr Alexander is a Director, Client Markets for Swiss Reinsurance Company Ltd and Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Branch. His business responsibility is Head of P&C Reinsurance, Hong Kong & Taiwan. The role involves providing reinsurance capacity and services to assist Swiss Re's clients in managing and developing their business. David is based in Hong Kong where he has lived for over 17 years.

Mr Alexander graduated from the University of Warwick (UK) with an honours degree in Mathematics. He is a Fellow of the UK Institute of Actuaries and also holds an Advanced Professional Diploma in Managed Care.

Life Insurance Council Chairman 2018/2019

Ms Charity Au is the Chairman of the Life Insurance Council (LIC) and a member of the HKFI Governing Committee and Insurance Agents Registration Board. She is the Chairman of FinTech Task Force and Life Operation and Risk Management Working Group. She also serves on other task forces and committees including the Greater China Affairs, the Prevention of Insurance Fraud & Claims Database, the Talent Development, the Customer Advocacy and the Stakeholders.

Ms Au has been serving as a member of the Insurance Claims Complaints Panel since 2010, and a member of the Insurance Training Board under the Vocational Training Council since 2013. Her previous role included President of LOMA Society of Hong Kong.

Ms Au is a dedicated practitioner in the industry. She started her career in the field of insurance operations and gained further expertise in distribution, marketing, project management and risk control over the past 30 years. She is currently the Chief Operating Officer of BOC Life overseeing Life Operations and Project Management.

Ms Au holds an MBA degree from the University of Western Ontario and has attained the qualifications of Certified Financial Planner (CFP), Fellow of the Life Management Institute (FLMI), Fellow of the Life and Health Claims (FLHC), Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and Certificated Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS).

He is the member of Task Forces on the Independence of the Insurance Authority and Policyholders Protection Scheme, and GIC Reinsurers’ Forum.

Mr Alexander is a Director, Client Markets for Swiss Reinsurance Company Ltd and Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Branch. His business responsibility is Head of P&C Reinsurance, Hong Kong & Taiwan. The role involves providing reinsurance capacity and services to assist Swiss Re's clients in managing and developing their business. David is based in Hong Kong where he has lived for over 17 years.

Mr Alexander graduated from the University of Warwick (UK) with an honours degree in Mathematics. He is a Fellow of the UK Institute of Actuaries and also holds an Advanced Professional Diploma in Managed Care.

Ms Charity Au
Life Insurance Council Chairman 2018/2019

Ms Charity Au is the Chairman of the Life Insurance Council (LIC) and a member of the HKFI Governing Committee and Insurance Agents Registration Board. She is the Chairman of FinTech Task Force and Life Operation and Risk Management Working Group. She also serves on other task forces and committees including the Greater China Affairs, the Prevention of Insurance Fraud & Claims Database, the Talent Development, the Customer Advocacy and the Stakeholders.

Ms Au has been serving as a member of the Insurance Claims Complaints Panel since 2010, and a member of the Insurance Training Board under the Vocational Training Council since 2013. Her previous role included President of LOMA Society of Hong Kong.

Ms Au is a dedicated practitioner in the industry. She started her career in the field of insurance operations and gained further expertise in distribution, marketing, project management and risk control over the past 30 years. She is currently the Chief Operating Officer of BOC Life overseeing Life Operations and Project Management.

Ms Au holds an MBA degree from the University of Western Ontario and has attained the qualifications of Certified Financial Planner (CFP), Fellow of the Life Management Institute (FLMI), Fellow of the Life and Health Claims (FLHC), Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) and Certificated Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS).
