The Hong Kong Federation of Insurers Appoints 2004/2005 New Office Bearers

The Hong Kong Federation of Insurers (HKFI) announces today (Friday, 14 May 2004) the appointment of its Governing Committee for the term 2004/2005:

Mr Kin-por Chan has more than 10 years experience in the general insurance industry while Mr Roddy Anderson has been engaging in the life insurance industry in Hong Kong over a decade.
Under the Governing Committee of the HKFI, there are two Councils responsible for dealing with all technical matters in respect of general insurance business and life insurance business. The Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the General Insurance Council are Mr Keith Land and Mr Leo Ma respectively. As regards the Life Insurance Council, Mr Richard Ip and Mr Raymond Chan are its new Chairman and Deputy Chairman respectively.
"The biggest challenge for the new Governing Committee in the year ahead is to foster better understanding of the industry and its basic principles, " said Mr Kin-por Chan, Chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers. "Whilst we are aware that the complexity, dynamism and diversity of insurance may not be easy to comprehend, we are confident that enhanced transparency and better communication will help to improve the public understanding of our business."
The HKFI was established in August 1988 and enjoys full recognition by the Hong Kong SAR Government as the representative insurer body of the industry. It exists to promote insurance to the people of Hong Kong and build consumer confidence in the industry by encouraging the highest standards of ethics and professionalism amongst its Members.

Mr Kin-por Chan
Mr Kin-por Chan is the Chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers (HKFI) for 2004/2005 and was the 2003/2004 Deputy Chairman of the HKFI, Chairman of the Employees Compensation Insurer Insolvency Bureau, the Task Force on EOC Discussion Paper and the Legal Working Group. He has been a member of the Governing Committee for the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers since 2001, a Councillor of the General Insurance Council for seven years and was elected Chairman for 2001/2002. He has been a General Committee member of the Insurance Claims Complaints Bureau since May 2003 and has served as an Honorary Secretary of the Bureau since 1995.
Mr Chan has been appointed by the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC) as a Council Member since 1999 and from 1998 to 2001, he also served the HKIAC as an Advisory Council Member. He is a Director and the Honorary Secretary of the Chinese Insurance Association of Hong Kong Limited, having served as its Chairman in 1998 and 1999. He is also an Executive Board Member of the East Asian Insurance Congress for the term 2002 - 2004.
Mr Chan is currently serving the HKSAR Government as a member of the Insurance Advisory Committee, a member of the Employees Compensation Assistance Fund Board, a member of the Administrative Appeals Board, and a member of the Advisory Committee on Travel Agents. Since 1998, he has been a member of the Election Committee (Insurance) for the Legislative Council of the HKSAR. He is a co-opted member of the Working Group on Construction Site Safety and Employees Compensation Insurance set up by the Provisional Construction Industry Co-ordination Board of the Environment, Transport and Works Bureau.
Apart from being an Assistant General Manager and the Head of Insurance Group of Hang Seng Bank, responsible for the Bank's general insurance, life insurance and MPF businesses, Mr Chan is also the Director and General Manager of Hang Seng Insurance Company Limited and a Director of Hang Seng Life Limited. He is a Chartered Insurer and an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute of the UK (ACII).

Mr Roddy Anderson
Mr Roddy Anderson is currently the Deputy Chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers. He has been a member of the Governing Committee of the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers and a Councillor of the Life Insurance Council since 1997 and was the Deputy Chairman of the Task Force on EOC Discussion Paper and a member of the Task Force on Policyholders' Protection Funds for the term 2003/2004. He was the 2000/2001 Chairman of the Life Insurance Council. He has also represented the Life Insurance Council on the Insurance Training Board of the Vocational Training Council since 1997. Having served as an Honorary Secretary of the Insurance Claims Complaints Bureau for a number of years, he is elected Chairman since 2001.
Mr Anderson came to Hong Kong in 1993. Being an Executive Director of Dah Sing General Insurance Company Limited and Dah Sing Financial Holdings Company Limited, which is quoted on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, Mr Anderson is Managing Director of Dah Sing Life Assurance Company Limited, which is part of the Dah Sing Financial Group. Prior to this, he held various senior positions in the financial services divisions of Barclays Bank in the UK and Europe, and has spent the majority of his working career successfully developing the concept of bancassurance.
He qualified as a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of England (F IA ) in 1974 and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland.

Mr Keith Land
Mr Keith Land is the Chairman of the General Insurance Council and a member of the Governing Committee of the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers for the term 2004/2005 and Chairman of the Motor Insurers' Bureau of Hong Kong. He was the 2003/2004 Deputy Chairman of the General Insurance Council, a Council member of the Employee Compensation Insurer Insolvency Bureau, Chairman of the Task Force on Employees Compensation - Amended Definition of Occupational Disease Cover, as well as a member of the Task Force on Policyholders' Protection Funds and the Task Force on Employees Compensation Claim Award Study. He was also the Chairman of the Task Force on Employees' Compensation Review for the term 2001/2002.
Mr Land is the Managing Director, Hong Kong & CEO, China of Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance (Hong Kong) Limited. He has more than 20 years of general insurance experience in the UK and Asia. Prior to joining the Hong Kong operation, Mr Land held various management positions for Royal & Sun Alliance Group plc in UK and India.
Mr Land holds a MBA degree from the Open University in the UK and is a Chartered Insurer and Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute in the UK (FCII).
Life Insurance Council Chairman 2004/2005
Mr Richard Ip
Mr Richard Ip is currently the Chairman of the Life Insurance Council and a member of the Governing Committee of the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers. He was serving as a member of the Task Force on Policyholders' Protection Funds and has been the Chairman of the Actuarial Working Group since 2000. He was the Deputy Chairman of the Life Insurance Council for the term 2003/2004 and the President of the Actuarial Society of Hong Kong in 1996.
Mr Ip is the Assistant General Manager of the American International Assurance Company (Bermuda) Limited. He has more than 20 years experience in life insurance industry and has obtained the qualification as Fellow of the Society of Actuaries of USA (FSA) in 1987.

Mr Chan has been appointed by the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC) as a Council Member since 1999 and from 1998 to 2001, he also served the HKIAC as an Advisory Council Member. He is a Director and the Honorary Secretary of the Chinese Insurance Association of Hong Kong Limited, having served as its Chairman in 1998 and 1999. He is also an Executive Board Member of the East Asian Insurance Congress for the term 2002 - 2004.
Mr Chan is currently serving the HKSAR Government as a member of the Insurance Advisory Committee, a member of the Employees Compensation Assistance Fund Board, a member of the Administrative Appeals Board, and a member of the Advisory Committee on Travel Agents. Since 1998, he has been a member of the Election Committee (Insurance) for the Legislative Council of the HKSAR. He is a co-opted member of the Working Group on Construction Site Safety and Employees Compensation Insurance set up by the Provisional Construction Industry Co-ordination Board of the Environment, Transport and Works Bureau.
Apart from being an Assistant General Manager and the Head of Insurance Group of Hang Seng Bank, responsible for the Bank's general insurance, life insurance and MPF businesses, Mr Chan is also the Director and General Manager of Hang Seng Insurance Company Limited and a Director of Hang Seng Life Limited. He is a Chartered Insurer and an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute of the UK (ACII).
The Hong Kong Federation of Insurers Deputy Chairman 2004/2005
Mr Roddy Anderson
Mr Roddy Anderson is currently the Deputy Chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers. He has been a member of the Governing Committee of the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers and a Councillor of the Life Insurance Council since 1997 and was the Deputy Chairman of the Task Force on EOC Discussion Paper and a member of the Task Force on Policyholders' Protection Funds for the term 2003/2004. He was the 2000/2001 Chairman of the Life Insurance Council. He has also represented the Life Insurance Council on the Insurance Training Board of the Vocational Training Council since 1997. Having served as an Honorary Secretary of the Insurance Claims Complaints Bureau for a number of years, he is elected Chairman since 2001.
Mr Anderson came to Hong Kong in 1993. Being an Executive Director of Dah Sing General Insurance Company Limited and Dah Sing Financial Holdings Company Limited, which is quoted on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, Mr Anderson is Managing Director of Dah Sing Life Assurance Company Limited, which is part of the Dah Sing Financial Group. Prior to this, he held various senior positions in the financial services divisions of Barclays Bank in the UK and Europe, and has spent the majority of his working career successfully developing the concept of bancassurance.
He qualified as a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of England (F IA ) in 1974 and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland.
General Insurance Council Chairman 2004/2005
Mr Keith Land
Mr Keith Land is the Chairman of the General Insurance Council and a member of the Governing Committee of the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers for the term 2004/2005 and Chairman of the Motor Insurers' Bureau of Hong Kong. He was the 2003/2004 Deputy Chairman of the General Insurance Council, a Council member of the Employee Compensation Insurer Insolvency Bureau, Chairman of the Task Force on Employees Compensation - Amended Definition of Occupational Disease Cover, as well as a member of the Task Force on Policyholders' Protection Funds and the Task Force on Employees Compensation Claim Award Study. He was also the Chairman of the Task Force on Employees' Compensation Review for the term 2001/2002.
Mr Land is the Managing Director, Hong Kong & CEO, China of Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance (Hong Kong) Limited. He has more than 20 years of general insurance experience in the UK and Asia. Prior to joining the Hong Kong operation, Mr Land held various management positions for Royal & Sun Alliance Group plc in UK and India.
Mr Land holds a MBA degree from the Open University in the UK and is a Chartered Insurer and Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute in the UK (FCII).
Life Insurance Council Chairman 2004/2005
Mr Richard Ip
Mr Richard Ip is currently the Chairman of the Life Insurance Council and a member of the Governing Committee of the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers. He was serving as a member of the Task Force on Policyholders' Protection Funds and has been the Chairman of the Actuarial Working Group since 2000. He was the Deputy Chairman of the Life Insurance Council for the term 2003/2004 and the President of the Actuarial Society of Hong Kong in 1996.
Mr Ip is the Assistant General Manager of the American International Assurance Company (Bermuda) Limited. He has more than 20 years experience in life insurance industry and has obtained the qualification as Fellow of the Society of Actuaries of USA (FSA) in 1987.
