The Hong Kong Federation of Insurers Appoints 2017/2018 New Office Bearers

The Hong Kong Federation of Insurers (HKFI) announces today (Friday, 28 April 2017) the appointment of its Governing Committee for the term 2017/2018:

Mr Stuart Harrison has over 30 years of experience in running and transforming life insurance, general insurance and wealth management businesses, and has a strong track record of restructuring life insurance distribution model in Asia. Mr Pui-leung Chan has over 30 years of experience in general insurance with expertise in underwriting and marketing.
 
Under the Governing Committee of the HKFI, there are two Councils responsible for dealing with all technical matters concerning general insurance and life insurance respectively. The General Insurance Council is chaired by Mr Jimmy Poon while the Life Insurance Council is chaired by Mr Praveen Daswani.
 
Established in August 1988, the HKFI enjoys full recognition by the Hong Kong SAR Government as the representative insurer body of the industry and is responsible for the administration of close to 90,000 registered insurance agents in the territory. It exists to promote insurance to the people of Hong Kong and build consumer confidence in the industry by promoting high standards of ethics and professionalism amongst its Members.

Mr Stuart Harrison
The Hong Kong Federation of Insurers (HKFI) Chairman 2017/2018

Mr Stuart Harrison is the Chairman of the HKFI, a member of the HKFI Governing Committee and a Councillor of the Life Insurance Council (LIC). In the term of 2016/2017, he was HKFI’s Deputy Chairman and LIC’s Chairman. He also served as Chairman of LIC ILAS Products Working Group and Professional Standards Working Group.
 
Mr Harrison joined AXA in April 2009 as the Chief Executive Officer of AXA Hong Kong. He has over 30 years of experience in running and transforming life insurance, general insurance and wealth management businesses, and has a strong track record of restructuring life insurance distribution model in Asia.
 
Prior to joining AXA, he had been the Country Manager and Managing Director of AIA Australia since May 2006. During his tenure, AIA Australia was named the fastest growing life insurer in Australia in both 2006 and 2007, he formed a successful strategic bank alliance and re-launched the IFA team resulting in record premium income. Before moving to AIA Australia, he was the Vice President and Chief Sales Officer for AIG Life Korea for 4 years. Prior to joining AIG Korea, Stuart had another 18 years of experience in the UK with Zurich Financial Services, Royal and Sun Alliance and TSB plc.

Mr Pui-leung Chan
HKFI Deputy Chairman 2017/2018

Mr Pui-leung Chan is the Deputy Chairman of the HKFI, a member of the HKFI Governing Committee and a Councillor of the General Insurance Council (GIC). In the term 2016/2017, he was the GIC’s Chairman and a member of the HKFI Governing Committee. He also served as Chairman of the Insurers-Brokers Liaison Committee, Task Forces on Greater China Affairs, Young Insurance Executive Development Programme, and the GIC Legal Working Group. Mr Chan is a member of GIC Task Force on Employees’ Compensation.
 
Mr Chan is the Deputy Chairman of Employees’ Compensation Insurance Residual Scheme, Board Member of Employees Compensation Insurer Insolvency Bureau and Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Hong Kong.
 
Mr Chan, the General Manager of China Taiping Insurance (HK) Company Limited, is responsible for the overall management and business development of the company. He has over 30 years of experience in general insurance with expertise in underwriting and marketing.
  
Mr Chan holds a Master Degree in Business Administration from the University of Hong Kong and qualifies as a Member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, UK.

Mr Jimmy W F Poon
General Insurance Council Chairman 2017/2018

Mr Jimmy Poon is the Chairman of the General Insurance Council (GIC), a member of the HKFI Governing Committee (GC) and a Councillor of Life Insurance Council (LIC). He was HKFI Chairman 2014/2015. In the term of 2016/2017, he was the GIC’s Deputy Chairman, a member of the HKFI GC and a LIC’s Councillor. He also served on various Task Forces and Working Groups, including Chairman of the Task Force on Policyholders Protection Scheme, Member of the Insurers-Brokers Liaison Committee, Task Forces on Greater China Affairs, Prevention of Insurance Fraud & Claims Database, Review of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance, the Independence of the Insurance Authority, and Young Insurance Executive Development Programme. He was the delegates of Accident Insurance Association, Medical Insurance Association and a member of HKFI and GIC Task Forces on Consultancy Study on Risk-based Capital Framework and LIC Professional Standards Working Group.
 
Mr Poon is currently a member of Employees’ Compensation Insurance Levies Management Board, Employees Compensation Insurance Residual Scheme Board, Employees Compensation Assistance Fund Board, Travel Industry Compensation Fund Management Board and Independent Director of Travel Industry Council of Hong Kong. He also represents the HKFI and GIC at the Committee on Employees’ Compensation of the Labour Advisory Board and Road Safety Council. He is also the Honorary Secretary of the Insurance Claims Complaints Bureau. In addition, Mr Poon has been participating in various industry organizations. He is appointed as the Deputy Chairman of Motor Insurers' Bureau of Hong Kong and Councillor of Employees’ Compensation Insurer Insolvency Bureau.
 
Mr Poon, the Chief Executive Officer of Dah Sing Insurance Company (1976) Limited and Dah Sing Life Assurance Company Limited, is responsible for the development of general and life insurance businesses of Dah Sing Financial Group.
 
Mr Poon holds an ANZII (Assoc) qualification and a Master Degree in Business Management, has over 30 years of experience in general insurance with expertise in underwriting, reinsurance, product development, sales and marketing.

Mr Praveen Daswani
Life Insurance Council Chairman 2017/2018

A Chartered Insurer by Profession, Mr Praveen Daswani, is the Chairman of the Life Insurance Council (LIC) and a member of the HKFI Governing Committee.
 
He was first elected to the LIC in 2009 and the LIC’s Deputy Chairman in the term 2016/2017. Over the years, he has served on, or chaired, various industry task forces, committees and working groups of the HKFI, including the HKFI Insurers-Brokers Liaison Committee, the Task Forces on Holistic Consumer Protection Framework, the Task Force on the Review of the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance amongst others. He is Chairman of the Task Force on Automatic Exchange of Financial Account Information and Deputy Chairman of Investment-link Assurance Scheme Products Working Group under the LIC.
 
Since 2009 he has acted as an Honorary Secretary for the Insurance Claims Complaints Bureau, an adjudication board set up by the insurance industry, and currently serves as a General Committee of the Bureau. He is also a member of the Hong Kong Advisory Council of the Chartered Insurance Institute.

Mr Daswani is the Local Chief Executive & Branch Manager of Generali Worldwide Insurance Company Limited in Hong Kong, and part of the Management Committee of the Company’s regulated branches in both Hong Kong and Singapore. He has been with the firm since May 1995. During this time he has gained extensive experience in the international financial services sector having worked at both regional and international levels in various management roles encompassing Business Development, Operations, and Compliance.

Academically, in addition to holding a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Financial Services from Napier University in Edinburgh, an Executive Diploma in Management from The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, he is a Chartered Insurer, an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute and a Qualified Member of the Personal Finance Society in the UK. Mr Daswani is in addition a Professional Member of the International Compliance Association and a Member of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investments.
