The Hong Kong Federation of Insurers Appoints 2010/2011 New Office Bearers

The Hong Kong Federation of Insurers (HKFI) announces today (Friday, 30 April 2010) the appointment of its Governing Committee for the term 2010/2011:

Mr Allan Yu has over 30 years of practical experience in the general insurance and Mr Alex Chu has over 28 years of experience in the insurance industry.

Under the Governing Committee of the HKFI, there are two Councils responsible for dealing with all technical matters concerning general insurance and life insurance respectively. The General Insurance Council is chaired by Mr Harry Wong while the Life Insurance Council is chaired by Mr Alex Chu.

Established in August 1988, the HKFI enjoys full recognition by the Hong Kong SAR Government as the representative insurer body of the industry. It exists to promote insurance to the people of Hong Kong and build consumer confidence in the industry by promoting high standards of ethics and professionalism amongst its Members.

Mr Allan K N Yu

Mr Yu is the Chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers.  In the term of 2009/2010, he was the Deputy Chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers and Chairman of Task Forces on Insurance Scam and Disclosure of Intermediaries' Remuneration. He was also a member of the Task Forces on Independence of Insurance Authority and Terrorism Levy under the General Insurance Council.

Mr Yu has also actively participated in a number of industry bodies and other insurance associations. He is currently appointed as a Council Member of the Employees Compensation Insurer Insolvency Bureau and the Motor Insurers' Bureau of Hong Kong, as well as the Director of the Employees' Compensation Insurance Residual Scheme Bureau Board whilst serving as a member of the General Committee and the Honorary Secretary of the Insurance Claims Complaints Bureau.

Mr Yu is Director of General Business at Zurich Insurance Company Limited, responsible for strategic planning and driving the success of the general business for Zurich Group in Hong Kong. He has over 30 years of experience in general insurance and expertise in underwriting, pricing, reinsurance, claim reserving models and product development.

Mr Yu holds the professional qualification of Associateship of The Chartered Insurance Institute. He earned a Diploma in the Young Manager Programme at INSEAD (The European Institute of Business Administration) in France.

Mr Alex W Y Chu

Mr Chu is currently the Deputy Chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers (HKFI) and the Chairman of the Life Insurance Council.  During the term of 2009/2010, he was the Chairman of the Life Insurance Council, the Task Force on Proposed Set-up of a Financial Dispute Resolution Centre, the Task Force on Race Discrimination Ordinance and the Retirement Schemes Working Group.  He also served as a Member of the HKFI Governing Committee and various Task Forces on Disclosure of Intermediaries' Remuneration, Healthcare Reform, Independence of Insurance Authority, Policyholders' Protection Fund and Renminbi Life Insurance Products.  Mr Chu has been the Honorary Secretary of the Insurance Claims Complaints Bureau since 2007. 

Externally, Mr Chu is a Member of the Mandatory Provident Fund Schemes Operation Review Committee and Guidelines Committee.  He also serves on the Insurance Intermediaries Quality Assurance Scheme Steering Committee under the Insurance Authority and Investment-Linked Assurance and Pooled Retirement Funds Committee under the Securities and Futures Commission.

Mr Chu joined HSBC Insurance (Asia-Pacific) Holdings Limited in 2003 as Chief Risk Officer. He was instrumental in establishing the initial risk management framework for the Hong Kong insurance business. He went on to lead a number of strategic initiatives and was appointed General Manager and Head of Personal Insurance in 2006. In April 2009, Mr Chu has assumed the role of Director and Head of Employee Benefits Business. He has also been appointed as the Chief Executive of HSBC Life (International) Limited since 2006.

Mr Harry K T Wong

Mr Wong is the Chairman of the General Insurance Council and the Governing Committee member of the Hong Kong Federation of Insurers.  He was also the Chairman of the Task Force on Employees Compensation and served on various Task Forces on Competition Law, Disclosure of Intermediaries' Remuneration, Insurance Scam, Recovery Agents and Report by the HKMA on Distribution of Structured Products for the term of 2009/2010.
 
In addition, he is the Honorary Secretary of the Insurance Claims Complaints Bureau.

Mr Wong is the Director and General Manager of Hong Leong Insurance (Asia) Limited.  In this capacity, he is responsible for the overall management and development of the company operation in Hong Kong.  In the meantime, he also provides support to the Group Companies in the development of other business initiatives within the Asian Pacific region, in particular potential in China.

Prior to joining Hong Leong, Mr Wong served in a number of senior positions with leading insurance companies and an international loss adjusting firm in Hong Kong since 1979.  During his 30 years of insurance services, he had assumed responsibilities in underwriting, claims, business development and strategic planning etc.
